Can you share a pivotal moment or experience in your life that sparked your passion for art? How has that moment influenced your artistic voice today?
Delphin Montessuit: From a young age, I was fortunate to visit the Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Switzerland with my grandparents at least once a year. This experience was my first encounter with the world of art. The foundation housed remarkable pieces from renowned artists like Miró and Van Gogh, as well as sculptures by César. These visits exposed me to a rich spectrum of artistic references that continue to influence my work today. This diverse array of influences not only fuels my creativity but also enriches my ever-evolving perspective on art, keeping me inspired and preventing any sense of monotony.
What distinctive elements or recurring themes can we find in your work? How do these reflect your personality, beliefs, or experiences?
Delphin Montessuit: Movement has always been central to my life. Growing up with a background in skiing and skateboarding, I started taking photos at the skatepark, capturing my friends in action. This experience shaped my journey as a photographer and artist, helping me develop a keen eye for motion. Over time, I’ve refined my visual style, creating images that make full use of my camera's dynamic range: bright highlights, deep shadows, and powerful colors, they bring a sense of strength and depth to my work that feels essential to me.
How do the environments and people around you influence your creative process, and how do you approach creating the right atmosphere for each project?
Delphin Montessuit: A significant part of my creative process involves seeking inspiration from my surroundings and the people I meet. I thrive creatively by exploring new environments and spending time with inspiring individuals like musicians, designers, and athletes. When I’m working on a project, I focus on finding the atmosphere that best suits it. For me, it’s essential to create a mood that transports and envelops the viewer, drawing them fully into the experience I’m trying to convey.
When someone views your art, what emotions or thoughts do you hope they walk away with? Is there a particular story or message behind your work that you feel is essential to share?
Delphin Montessuit: My goal when creating images is to inspire people to explore their world, whether it’s the mountains, a city, a country, or even a mental space. What matters to me is sparking that sense of curiosity and gently guiding people toward where they want to be. I want viewers to see my work and think, “Yes, that’s what I want to do, that’s where I want to go.” Ultimately, I aim to break down the boundaries of creativity and encourage people to see the world in a fresh, new way.
